Rurouni Kenshin by Nobohiro Watsuki is remarkably awesome. It takes place during the Meiji Reformation in Japan. Kenshin Himura is a rurouni, a wanderer without a home, and his fortuitous meeting with a struggling swordswomen begins to find a new home in a very different Japan. However, Kenshin’s past is that of, the legendary battosai, a legendary assassin that fought against the Tokugawa regime in the last great war. The story is steeped in actual history and while there are definitely fictional embellishments, the strong world building and character driven story are amazing. The epic sword fights don’t hurt either. The manga in my opinion is superior to the anime but don’t let that stop you from watching it if that is what you prefer. All 28 volumes are out in manga form and is definitely worth it.
